Hi Bran001,

You need to start Windows in "Safe Mode with Networking" by restarting your PC and pressing and holding the F8 key before the operating system starts loading. Please see this link for more instructions: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm. Please follow these instructions afterwards:

[A] REQUIRED SOFTWARE

Download these programs (all are free for personal use):

NOTE: Unless you already have an antivirus, you should install BullGuard too and use its free trial: http://www.bullguard.com/download.aspx

[B] PREPARING THE COMPUTER

1. Install CCleaner, Ad-Aware and Spybot and make sure you download all the available updates.
2. Extract KillBox and HijackThis! from their archives.
3. Back-up your registry data by following these steps:
  - go to Start > Run and type “regedit” (without the inverted comma) – this opens your Registry Editor;
  - go to the Registry Editor’s File menu and select export;
  - save a copy of your registry data and close the Registry Editor.

[C] USING THE NEWLY INSTALLED SOFTWARE

1. Clean-up your computer with CCleaner:
  a. Open the application and go to Options (last button on the left-hand side of the console) > Advanced section.
  b. Uncheck the “Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours” option.
  c. Go to the application’s Cleaner section (first button on the left-hand side of the console).
  d. Press the “Run Cleaner” button.
  e. Go to CCleaner’s Issues section and press the “Scan for Issues” button.
  f. Uncheck all the Unused File Extensions (if any) in the list that appears on the right-hand side of the console.
  g. Press the “Fix selected issues...” button and close this program after the process finishes.

2. Scan your computer with Ad-Aware:
  a. Open this application and press the “Scan now” button, on the left-hand side of the console.
  b. Select the “Perform full system scan” mode and click Next.
  c. Check all the critical objects that Ad-Aware finds and remove them.
  d. Close this application.

3. Scan your computer with Spybot:
  a. Open this application and go to its Immunize section.
  b. Press the Immunize button, in the upper part of the console.
  c. Go to Spybot’s “Search & Destroy” section and press the “Check for problems” button.
  d. Remove all the infections if finds and close this program.

4. Run the "hijackthis.exe" file:
  a. In the new window that appears, please click the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button.
  b. After the program finishes searching for abnormal objects, the logfile will be saved automatically in the same folder in which you have placed the contents of the archive.
  c. Locate the log file and post its content on this forum.

5. You will have to use KillBox only after we analyse your HijackThis! log. In case there are any files that need to be deleted, you should use this application to remove them from your computer.

NOTE: It is important that you follow all these instructions exactly in order to prevent damage to your computer. BullGuard was not designed to deal with all spyware or adware infections, but you could run a full scan with this application before moving on to section [C] of my instructions. This will ensure there are no viral threats present on your PC.

I am looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Cheers,

Andrei A.

Hi Jago Kaast,

Please run HijackThis! again and check these entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

Press the "Fix checked" button and reboot your computer in "Safe Mode". Locate these files on your computer, select them and press Shift+Del in order to delete them:

winocx.exe - perform a search in order to find it
C:\insp.exe

Check whether the problems persist and post another fresh HijackThis! log if this doesn't get rid of the nasties.

the only question i have left is... what can i do to prevent this from possibly happening again? as a matter of fact, i don't really know what i did to cause it to happen in the first place... can anyone shed some light on what i did / what happened / what caused / and what i actually deleted?

Thanks again

Hi Jago,

Sorry I haven't posted any replies recently.

First of all, one of the files you deleted the last time (winocx.exe) might belong to a worm. So I would ask you to scan your computer with an antivirus, run CCleaner, Spybot and Ad-Aware again and if none of these help, please post a fresh HijackThis! log.

Cheers,

Andrei A.

just thought i'd mention another problem i'm having... this isn't something that is a huge thing to me... but hey... if someone knows how to fix it, then great

ok... after i had taht sasser worm removed... i downloaded Windows security updates and .net fix or whatever the thing is called...

so i'l doin the virus scan and i leave to go take a shower... i come back say 20 min later... and the screen is at the login screen... i click my account and it asks for a password? sound normal? the thing is... i didn't have a password... i'd click enter and i couldn't get in, i'd type my possible passwords... nothing worked... so i just clicked restart... a message comes up saying "other users are on at the moment, would you still like to close? you will lose your un-saved data" something to taht extent.... so i restart... and my welcome thing comes up and i click my account and it goes right in... this has happend a couple of times so far... i have no idea what is actually goin on...

this started to happen just after i installed the .net fix... cause i never had the welcome screen come up even when i was turning the computer on...

god. i NEVER had this many problems w/ 2000 Pro... i'm starting to not like XP Pro :P

Hi Jago,

First of all, your HijackThis! log: I noticed you still have these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Ocx Service] winocx.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mlp] C:\insp.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Ocx Service] winocx.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [mlp] C:\insp.exe

So, you need to run HijackThis! again and FIX CHECK them. Make sure you delete these files (winocx.exe and insp.exe) and do tell us the exact path where you found the first one (winocx.exe).

Second of all, please follow these steps in order to solve the problem with the login screen:

1. Righ click your desktop and select Properties.
2. Go to the Screen Saver tab in the window that appears and uncheck the "On resume, password protect" option.
3. Press the "Power..." button and go to the Advanced tab of the next window that appears.
4. Uncheck the "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" option.
5. Confirm all the changes by clicking Apply.

Tell me how your Task Manager and login screen behaves after that.

Cheers,

Andrei A.

alright... well that worked for a little bit... the whole log in thing is fixed... but the regedit/task manager/virus scanner is still FUBAR

after i "fixed" what you said, it worked but then it didn't like 5 min later...

now, i've been going back and forth through safemode trying to delete those entries and stuff like that...

another problem occured... i havn't looked into it... but FREEPOD has me now :P i never installed it... but the install keeps re-downloading to my destop everytime i open the internet... i keep deleting it out of HJT, but that hasn't worked to well...

what i've been trying to do is delete those entries then update my virus scan software in an attempt to prevent it from coming back... but it seems to not want me to do that lol... i get 1/2 through the updates and it closes... (i'm in Safe Mode at the moment tryin to update stuff like that)

I'm goin to post up two logs... the first will be the first one i did before i started deleting stuff today, the next is one right now...

well... this is a shpadoinkle of a situation...

i managed to get in, update and run my virus scanning software (Norton's Antivirus Pro), it cleaned out 10 pieces of adware and also prevents the
W32.Spybot.Worm from initiateing... so i can now open regedit and task manager as i please....

the only thing left now is when i start up my computer, Norton's initiates and then like 3 min later, W32.Spybot.Worm trys to come in through the internet, and Norton blocks it... what i think it is is that there is a registry or a file somewhere (that is not detected by nortons, ccleanr, or spybot) that is trying to reinstall the worm... now this doesn't bother me cause Nortons prevents it from reinstalling, but i would like to get rid of everything taht is not good for me.

i'll post up another HJT log in a minute here but first i'd like to thank you guys taht helped me

thanks

OK Jago,

Your latest log definitely looks clean. I am afraid there is no entry that is responsible for the problems you have with the worm. Here are some things you should do in order to prevent the infection from reappearing:

1. Disable System Restore, reboot your computer any restart this service.
2. Turn off unneeded services such as Telnet, or any FTP or Web servers.
3. Install and start using a firewall.
4. Keep your antivirus up to date and make sure you download all the Windows updates too.
5. Scan all the shared network drives if there are any in your network.

Finally, I will need to tell you that one of the main rules we have here is: "Never post your problem on someone else's treadnono. I forgot to mention this earlier and I would need to ask you to start a new thread in case you ever encounter security issues again (which I hope you don't). ;-)

Cheers,

Andrei A.

Hi All,

I apologise for not having posted on this thread recently, but I need to remind every-one that members need to start their own thread in order to avoid confusion.

Kumaresh - please run a scan with HijackThis! again and post the fresh log on a new thread.

Morpheus - your log has been moved onto this page: http://www.bullguard.com/forum/8/I-cant-open-Task-Manager_28235.html
