5 years! Thats what the Sasser author will get. Maybe even less, because he is a "Juvenile" How is that meant to deter other punks with similar destructive habits? I say give him a serious punishment and make an example!
What? No way! He should go free. He has done everyone a great service finding security vulnerabilities that threaten everybody because Microsoft cant figure out how to make security.
So thank you very much for finding this vulnerability and making everyone aware of it.
Sort of agree, it could have been destructive, but it was kept as a "joke" i mean, rebooting the computer is annoying, butit could have been worse. I just hope this has made people aware that they should get anti-virus and not be lazy, and just spend that little time getting all of the updates
the maker of the virus and any shouldnt get time. if componies like microsoft and any anti virus company really wanted to stop viruses, they would make some thing that reads whats being emailed and put on the internet. and i know that it is possible to do that because i was reading some thing saying that it is required for poeple in some country to have a device on there computer that records what they do.
Give them a job with companies in their hardware repair departments. Most of these hackers will probably get jobs, but perhpas they should be forced to take unglamorous, lower-paying jobs in county and state offices, instead of working for the Feds or corporations.
My personall view although it may be harsh, is that Virus creators are giving companies like symatech, bullguard and various other security firms a JOB
so destroying viruses would severly hit the market, and people would no longer have protection should virus writers become exsistant again,
Set the boy free, and use it as an example to others not to make virus's after all he got caught, why punish someone so young, maybe he can work with companies like bullguard, after all, a thief knows his job better then a policeman
PJohn says: "What? No way! He should go free. He has done everyone a great service finding security vulnerabilities that threaten everybody because Microsoft cant figure out how to make security. "
I say: PJohn, what the Hey are you thinking?? A great service? This virus isnt benign in any way! "duh, it just reboots the computer" - yeah, well, tell that to the hospitals all over the world that had to cancel scannings and operations because their equipment rebootet and their network flooded. Tell that to the patients who had to wait another day. Tell that to the families of those patients who didnt have time to wait another day.
Virus writers may be pointing to a relevant problem, pretty much like terrorists may be pointing to relevant problems by blowing up bombs, crashing planes and killing people. You think they should go free too?
No, but thats the extreme case, this person however did not want that to happen, And i hear of no case where it did, if it did then he does deserve time for the BAD things he caused, as for companies losing lots of moneys, most companies affected the loss would just be a minor blip to them...
the sasser was annoying but if he dint make a virus to expose windows vulrabilties sum1 else wud and possible worse than the harmless sasser.if windows made there running systems probly there wunt b any problems wud there so i say windows fucking sort it out.matt
I believe that Sasser made a lot of time and financial losses which we can let it just be forgotten, but definetly, it shows us again that Microsoft is not providing the security that a company that big, should be providing. Because when you have all those resources, you should provide the safest OS of them all.
Of course they will be attacked, because you always are if you are the biggest one, but they also have to take this into consideration.
It should open Bill's eyes, but then agian is not he first time outbreaks like this happens, so I think that Microsoft is very settled with the "fine product" they provied.
First of all, there has got to be a better way to discover these vulrabilities that gain control over your system. Virus and worms have been around as long as the computer has. So why aren't these weak or opened spots discovered before soft ware is released??? I agree with a lot of the responses that I have read. I did not know that they get time for doing this, which is good. These people are no better than the faceless cowards that bombed the World Trade Center or, any other crimnal. Some sweet person sent me the blaster worm and I'm still dealing with the effects of that. I do not agee that these people should get jobs from these antivirus software companies, because this give them an incentive to create them a job. "The economy is bad so I'll create a virus to create me a job, sure I'll do 5 years, but a jobs is waiting when I serve my time." Does this make you wonder??? Finally, they're saying that this worm takes up where other virus have been on your system and spreads more damage. Even if it is something annoying it's still not right. I'm always updating my computer and I still received the blaster, and this was very fustrating and time consuming, and you can never put a price on time. I'd rather not spend my time fixing something that some evil mind has created. I agree with the fire wall strike back idea..
It has to stop now, How is with a sentence to stop all
There is a lot going on in the industry we do not know, Microsoft are being targeted that is for sure, who by only they know. The politics are simple. Knock their operating system off the market and then you go to someone else. Whoever the someone else is, is the person we must look at first.
This is not a game for stupid teenagers with no sense ! There are lives at stake.
How many hospitals are affected, hooked up to networks with specialist equipment?
How many millions lost due to systems going down all over the world ?
How many students failing to get their work in on time due to viruses ?
How does it stop ?
When does it stop ?
The fact is that we will have secure systems, but a what cost.
We need to send these people down, and in such a way that it will discourage others.
personally my view is that all anti virus software shjould be free because then there would be not as much problems with viruses spreading from un secuered computers therefore cutting the numbers of viruses down. i also think in the early age of computers that anti virus software companies invented destructive codes(viruses) so they can get rich of there idea. matt
And there is, avast is free for instance so is AVG free edition
Howerver they do rightly charge for professional and more decent programs because it does cost them as they have to pay a team of analyststs and the people at the lab, download bandwith, program production, emergy responce team , etc etc etc
I read maybe a dozen of these comments. I had no idea that the thinking processes of people have been so skewed. I go along w/ purdigirl, Mak, and the fellow who pointed out the deaths that may well be a result of these "poor little juvenile punks." Sausage? I can see why that name fits you. The "law" boils down simply to the basis that one person does not have the right to infringe upon the rights of another. When it gets to that point, they/we/I am a social misfit. I should be removed from society. How long? To what degree? That is for our representatives (which is "us", of course) to reminate and pass legislation. We are a society. The "normal" procedure is so live and work together for mutual benefit. Not some form of destruction. And why are you jackals picking on Microsoft? An entity that is successful--so destroy it! Anyone (person or group) that is more successfu that I should be destroyed? Wow! What "deep thinkers" you are! What about the drug companies that spend millions of dollars on research every year and it goes down a rathole? Yet, they keep doing it. Why? So they can get rich, Stupid! Ahhh! But how "rich" are they entitled to get? Again, legislation. Rule by law. Representative government. And more shot at Bill G: Have you nits read of any articles about Mr. Gs largess? I have mental disabilities (thanks to the USPS that seems to be able to buy Federal prosecutors and judges). Postal related. My life "isn't" any more. I am a vegetable compared to what I used to be. Mr. G GAVE $4.5 BILLION to mental health causes. And that is just ONE of his gifts. Tax deduction, you say? SO??? Would it be right, Jackals, if his corp paid taxes on the total amount that it takes to net such a figure--and then tax the corp anyway? I think that Mr G was just naive enough to believe that this Internet World is such a wonderful thing he probably never thought about A-holes. Or Jackals.
Ahabthearab, I completely agree with you! Microsoft is so successful that they have to watch their step even when they are trying to provide fixes to problems such as viruses and worms. The moment Microsoft does something too effective on the anti-virus front, they would be faced with a big fat lawsuit from the AV industry for "abusing their position"
No matter what people say and how much they want to slag it off, Windows is a good operating system and not many others can make one as good. Thing is the people who actually moan about it are running at the time they are typing it !
I think people should leave microsoft alone, they do no harm to people, he gives to charity and has earned his money
Me too. Just because you are a good business man is no reason to be hated. I'm a Bill Gates fan for sure.
But I seem to have a different view on these virus writers than a lot of people. I think the penalties should be extremely harsh. Bullguard rarely removes them. I almost always have to manually delete them. And the free removal tools don't seem to work. You can't just see the full path in the Bullguard scan. It all ends up taking a LOT of time. Without a doubt, the penalties for virus writers should be EXTREMELY harsh, in my opinion.
FOR THE ONES WHO ENJOY COMING UP WITH VIRUSES. I SAY LOCK THE UP ON WORK RELEASE UNTIL THEY PAY FOR ALL THE DAMAGE THE HAVE CAUSED.THEN IF THEY EVER GET OUT THEY CAN WRITE A BOOK CALLED MOM AND DAD SEND LOTS OF SOAP ON A ROPE BECAUSE SOME HUGE GUY NAMED BUBBA IS AFTER ME.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH ACTIONS TAKEN LIKE THAT WOULD BE THE ONLY THING THAT WILL HELP DETER THESE PUNKS. I HAVE A NICE COMPUTER AND I DON'T WANT IT RUINED BECAUSE SOME PUNK ENJOYS IT. I SAY LOCK HIM UP AND PUNK HIM OUT.
Virus writers should certainly be severely punished, it is irrelevant what damage (if any) is caused. They deliberately set out to cause mischief writing it in the first place and at best are nothing more than techno vandals. As regard the view they are making people aware of security vulnerabilities my view is this.. thats utter b****x, they are merely doing it to make a name for themselves within their circle. If they were in it to make us all aware these vulnerabilities existed why dont they hold their hands up and say "My name is .... I have found this vulnerability in your OS"
Anti virus companies have much to answer for as well, I have yet to find anti virus software that is fool proof and is more than just a reactive piece of software, if they really wanted to eliminate virii the would develop better screening and prevention tools
Virus writers perform a valuable service in revealing system vulnerabilities. Many of them seem to be just playing around. However, at some point, a religious fanatic or insane person -- a Ted Kaczynski, for example – will see it as his/her mission in life to destroy the Internet and/or computers. If all the kids playing around behaved like many people seem to want them to, we’d be sitting ducks for a Ted Kaczynski. On the other hand, virus writers can cause tremendous damage, even if they’re not interested in destroying civilization. The answer is to punish according to the amount of damage done. Just inconveniencing computer users would be mildly punished. Causing serious injury or death would merit a larger sanction. That way we get the benefit of finding out about system vulnerabilities so that we can protect ourselves against really dangerous people, but we discourage anyone from doing serious harm (knowing, of course, that some would attempt to do serious harm even if it cost them their lives).
