done the OTC clean up & reset system restore points.
installed upto date malwarebytes.
when i tried to install avast it kept saying it was out of date.
i was using AVG before - can you recommend a good free anti virus programme ?

I haven't seen that before - the out of date issue with Avast. Are you by chance using some old saved setup file for it? When or after what does it indicate being our of date please?

one more thing - is malwarebytes something that can always be running - like avast or do you run it every now & then to check for malware ?

If you pay for it, it then provides active components, but you will have to manually update and scan with the free version.
