I have experienced the program crashing several times recently while I was configuring things inside game mode. The Bullguard gui went to all black for several seconds then crashed. Is this a known bug?

No it is not something I have ever seen.

Please contact Support, at your convenience, and they will ask you for the logs, so we can investigate the issue.
