OK - after a long pause..... all done as instructed - machine does function better but I cannot load the lfash player - I keep getting the GetPlus(+) error 16241.203.286 and have tried everything I can to figure this one out. The Adobe problem seems to have resolved with my using the windows clean up utility to remove it and then a clean download from a mirror instead of the Adobe site. Here is the latest hijack this - stioll seems like an awful lot of stuff out there...

By the way the new Hi Jack this update does not seem to produce a scan log that I can copy so this one is using the older version (it is still there - I guess the new version does not reeplace it?)

I am not very clear on what you mean about the new HijackThis and no scan log. On a hunch, let's check some things now.

Click here or here and download Win32kDiag.exe directly to your C drive folder, so it then is C:\Win32kDiag.exe.

Then click that file to run the scan. Once that completes press any key to finish the scan. Post the new Win32kDiag.txt log with your next reply (it should be located on the desktop).

-----------------

If we have not used it yet there (use the existing copy if you have it), Go here, scroll down and download RootRepeal.zip to your Desktop. Unzip that, and then click RootRepeal.exe to open the scanner. Next click on the Report tab, and then click on Scan. A Window will open asking what to include in the scan. Check all of the below and then click Ok.

Drivers
Files
Processes
SSDT
Stealth Objects
Hidden Services

You will then be asked which drive to scan. Check C: and click Ok again. The scan will start. It will take a little while so please be patient. When the scan has finished, click on Save Report. Name the log RootRepeal.txt and save it to your Documents folder (it should default there). When you have done this, please copy and paste it in this thread.

OK - I tried to do as directed but the win32dial.exe only loads as a text file and says it cannot process a backup.
I tried the other scan and it crashed the machine - so I will wait for more instruction before trying again.

I wonder if file associations have been altered.

Right click Here and select Save Target As (Firefox Save Link As) and save UnHookExec.inf to your Desktop.

Then right-click on UnHookExec.inf and select Install. You may only see a desktop flicker as the changes are made.

---------------

Place a copy of Win32kDiag.exe on your desktop.

Then go to Go to Start - Run, type cmd (and press OK). At the prompt type or copy/paste the following, pressing Enter after:

cd %userprofile%\desktop
win32kdiag -r -f

Once that completes press any key to finish the scan. Post the new Win32kDiag.txt log with your next reply (it should be located on the desktop).

the cmd prompt does not load this - it comes back is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

As Win32kDiag does write the report to the desktop, if the desktop is blocked from activities in some way then these steps would fail. That "not recognized as an internal or external command" error though usually means the command is being run from a location different than the command file (example - the file is on th desktop but the command prompt is set to C:\Windows).

Run and post the RootRepeal log please.

well - unless the root scan is supposed to take several hours - something is wrong. The machine just freezes all processes and blinks and blinks and blinks - so - another idea? Sorry to be such a problem

Just a reminder to be very sure your security software is completely disabled and not involved with things there.

To keep me from having to search back through our work so far, if you do not already have the file click here and download the installer for Gmer to your desktop, then click that file to run Gmer.

If on it's opening scan Gmer locates items shown in red or indicates "hidden" or "rootkit", stop there, and click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please. We don't want any crashes just from taking an initial look at things.

If not, then click on Scan (before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan).

When completed, click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please.
