This site looks helpful so I signed up for it. I am having trouble with the redirect virus. I read what to do and this is my hijack this log. Thanks for any help.
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.3 (BETA) Scan saved at 7:36:57 PM, on 2/3/2010 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16735) Boot mode: Normal
Malware showing here. Let's see about delaying that a little, then get more details and start some repairs.
To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.
Open HijackThis, and choose None of the above, just start the program. Click Config – Misc Tools – Open process manager. From the list, click each of the following if it is present, and Kill Process. Close HijackThis.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtplugin.exe
--------------------
Download RSIT (random's system information tool) from here to your desktop. Then click on the RSIT.exe to open the RSIT display, and click the Continue button.
If necessary allow it to locate or download a copy of HijackThis as needed.
Once the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents here for review please. The log can also be found at C:\rsit\log.txt.
RSIT will also create a second log, info.txt, which will be minimized to your taskbar. Post that here as well please (it will also be stored at C:\rsit\info.txt).
You can break logs into parts and use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files, if needed.
--------------
Also click here and download the installer for Gmer to your desktop, then click that file to run Gmer.
Once the opening scan finishes, click on Scan (before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan).
When completed, click on the Copy button and rightclick on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and rightclick again and choose Paste. Copy the information and post it here please.
Thanks for the help. I followed your instructions and here are my logs.

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.
Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, but I would like you to rename the file as you download it (do not download it directly without renaming it - use right click "Save Target/Link As" ). For this, rename the downloading file to 456out.com, then click the renamed 456out.com to run that scan.
Be sure to install the Recovery Console if you are asked to do so. When the scan completes, a text window with your log will open. Please copy and paste that log back here.
A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

The scan picked up some hidden files that strike of rootkit activity. You didn't run the Gmer scan earlier so let's do that now. I will repost the steps if needed:
Click here and download the installer for Gmer to your desktop, then click that file to run Gmer.
That shows the rootkit. Now let's remove what shows and see if it isn't protecting the discovery of other parts of this infection.
To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.
Download The Avenger by Swandog from here and save it to your Desktop, and unzip the downloaded avenger.zip file. Then in the new avenger folder created locate and click on avenger.exe to run the tool.
Okay the warning. When the Avenger display opens copy/paste the following text inside the Code box into the Avenger box titled "Input script here:". Then click the Execute button to run the repair, click Yes, then allow Avenger to reboot your system.
Begin copying here: Drivers to delete: 4DW4R3 Files to delete: C:\WINDOWS\system32\4DW4R3c.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\4DW4R3DKnvJCRufi.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\4DW4R3IBfbAeTkTI.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\4DW4R3pmkARuMPQV.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\4DW4R3sv.dat C:\WINDOWS\system32\4DW4R3VArnPXREMx.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\4DW4R3.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32drivers\4DW4R3eoKXiurfsw.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\4DW4R3ItobsOTRre.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\4DW4R3KoBvQDbwrX.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\4DW4R3pkAwwNpfET.sys C:\WINDOWS\Temp\4DW4R3c40b Registry values to delete: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\runservices | Sysctrls Registry keys to delete: HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\4DW4R3
Your system may reboot twice to complete the repairs. After the reboot a text will open - copy/paste those contents back here please. The log can also be found at C:\avenger.txt.
--------------
Then run ComboFix and Gmer again, and post those logs along with the C:\avenger.txt log please.

The Avenger log indicates either all those files and settings disappeared, you made changes in between posts here or that it was run more than once. ComboFix looks good, which is good, but I would like to know why Avenger shows items not found. You ran it more than once?
To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.
Open and update Malwarebytes.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan", then click Scan. * The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. * The log is automatically saved by Malwarebytes and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in Malwarebytes. * Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply. If it calls for a reboot to complete the repairs do that as well then.
---------------
Disable your antivirus program and go here and run an online scan using ESET Online Scanner (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan, or download the installer to run it in a different browser). If you accept the Terms of Use, check the box and click Start. After the ActiveX Control has loaded, it will take a couple minutes for the scanner to get ready. Next, check the following boxes:
Remove found threats Scan unwanted applications
Next to "Current scan targets: Operating memory, Local drives", click the "Change" word. Make sure you place a check next to all disk drives, including any external drives that are attached (no need to check off the floppy or DVD/CD-Rom drives).
Click Start. This scan may take a while, so please be patient. A log may open when the scan is complete (if not, go to C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\ and open the file log.txt). Click Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here please.
If you have any problems getting Eset started, one work-around is to have an open Internet connection, and then click here and download the esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe Eset installer. Then click that file, and follow the same previous steps to run the scan.
Malwarebytes only located remnants of the infection, and the majority of what Eset removed are again another of the reasons torrent software use is just not a smart idea. Those are all Wimad-encoded music files (see here). Uses the media player's own functions to present a fake message, informing the person they need some codec or other item to play the file. And then provide a link to download that. Which is of course a malware downloader.
No active infection being picked up now, so looks clean. Before we do some last steps here to finish up post back how things are running please.
It seems to be better now. no more pop ups or redirection. I'm going to stop using limewire now since thats where most of the problems came from. Thanks for all the help.
Very good - just some final steps now to finish our work here.
You have an older and more vulnerable Java version installed there, so need to remove that and update to the latest version of Java.
Go here and download the latest version of Sun Java Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18. I recommend you choose to download the "Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Offline" by clicking on that to download the installer. The current file name for that is jre-6u18-windows-i586-s.exe.
When you have done that, Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall all versions Java/JRE (Sun Java Runtime Environment/J2SE Runtime Environment) showing below, and reboot after.
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Then be sure to disable all security software, and click that downloaded jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the latest Java version there, being sure to reboot after.
--------------
You can go ahead now and remove everything our work added to your system
Eset, if you don't plan to use it again, uninstalls through Add/Remove Programs.
You can also at this time delete the files/folders of the tools we used. To assist with some of that download OTC.exe by OldTimer to your desktop. This will help by automatically removing some of the tools we used.
Just click OTC.exe, then click CleanUp, and select Yes. When it finishes removing some of the tools and files we used there just agree to the reboot, and OTC should self-delete once the system has rebooted (if not just delete the OTC.exe file).
-------------------------
Then a good idea is to reset the System Restore. To do this, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Click the System Restore tab in the window that appears, and check the box that says "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and click Apply.
You will be asked if you are sure, click Yes. This will delete the restore points. Then click OK in the Properties window and reboot your computer.
When your desktop appears, right-click My Computer and select Properties once more. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore..." box and click Apply. OK.
In addition, I like to recommend reviewing the information Here to make sure you stay malware free.
