my friend got a virus but he's not sure if he got it through msn. whenever he opens his symantec or window firewall, it will automatically close after a few seconds. he also cannot get into any anti virus website. thus, he can't enter this forum as well. so i'm here helping him to post. help please! thanks.

Hello,

Can you put HijackThis.exe on an USB stick/CD/.. and make a logfile on his computer?
If HijackThis closes, try renaming it to something else (doesn't matter what).

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad as you will be in Safe Mode and unable to refer to this page.

Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded.

The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.

Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.

Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Doubleclick the "drweb-cureit.exe" and click "ok" in the prompt window that will open , asking "start the express scan now".

It will first make a quick scan of your system, let it clean what it find, and when it says "done"

Click on the green screwdriver-

Actions Tab- Adware-Dialers-Riskware-Hacktools, use dropdown menu and select -Delete

Click on the drive(s) you want to scan . A red dot will mark the selected drive(s) . Then hit the green arrow in lower right corner It will now scan your drive(s), say yes to all

After the scan, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list

Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv

Close Dr.Web Cureit.

Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

Start Superantispyware/rightclick on the black/yellow bug in tray.

Hit - Scan Your Computer - button

Click on the drive(s) you want to scan. Put a check in - Perform Complete Scan, then next

it will scan now. When scan have finished, put a checkmark with all items it found. Next, after cleaning, let it Reboot

Start Superantispyware again –

Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab.

Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.

Post this log along with fresh hijackthis log, Dr.Web log and tell how things are running ?

Do NOT post your problem in someone elses thread.

everything seems fine. the only problem is he can't on or off his windows firewall. his windows firewall is on anyway.

You still have some infections, I therefore suggest You run TrendMicro online scanner:

Access http://dk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/housecall/housecall_launch.php
Click Products.
In the next screen, where it says House Call, click Scan Now.
In the next screen, click Scan Now, It’s Free!
A pop-up window will ask you if you want to install and run Trend Micro. Click Yes.
The scanner will install. When the install is complete, you can use the program on the Web page. Click the My Computer check box and notice that everything beneath it also becomes checked, Click the Scan button. The scan will begin.
If the House Call program finds a virus, it will tell you. You can instruct the program to remove the virus from your computer. Alternatively, you can select Auto Clean so that the program will remove viruses automatically.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES

Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Do NOT post your problem in someone elses thread.

Start a new topic so that it may receive proper attention.

Run Hijackthis and place a check beside each of the following. Close all other browser windows except HJT.
Click fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Lmhosts Service] lmhost.exe

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Re-start your PC in Safe mode, by holding down the F8 button during the initial start up procedure. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Start PC in safe mode and hit the enter key.
This will start your PC with only essential Windows programmes running.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Delete the following files or folders (delete item in bold). Please do not be concerned if
any of the items are not found as they may have been automatically removed by actions I had
you take earlier in the cleaning process.

Delete-

Files:

C:\WINDOWS\system\system.exe

Next go to Start- Search and scrolldown using the scroll bar on the right. Go down to More advanced options and click.

Be sure the first three boxes are selected:

Search System folders

Search Hidden Files and folders

Search SubFolders

And delete:

lmhost.exe

Reboot normally, post new hijackthis log and tell how things are running ?

Click Start > Run, type services.msc > OK
In the list of services find:
Windows System Service (SYSTEMSVC)

Rightclick that line and choose Properties.
On the General tab Stop and set the service to disabled.

Reboot and tell how things are running. I don´t need more logs

the windows firewall still can't be switched on. the option for switching it on is blocked.

Spyware Guard Background process to check applications as they begin to run for known spyware and malicious code, produces an alert if necessary.

SpywareBlaster From the same company as Spyware guard, this is not a scanner, it blocks malicious objects and code from being downloaded, in addition to blocking access to sites known to download malware. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background and does not need to be open to protect your PC.
